According to Inspector Kelesezo Tsukru, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the South Fire Station in Kohima, the fire department was alerted to the event at 5:11 pm. Promptly responding to the emergency, the South Fire Station dispatched three fire tenders to the affected location. The swift mobilization of resources emphasising the crucial role of emergency services in reducing the impact of such incidents.
Further investigation revealed that the fire had engulfed a machinery plant integral to road construction activities. The equipment destroyed included essential components such as a bitumen burning equipment and a stone crusher. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire originated while these substances were undergoing a heating process, and a subsequent oil spill facilitated the rapid spread of the flames to the machinery.
Fortunately, the incident did not result in any reported casualties, which is a testament to either timely evacuation or the specific circumstances of the fire’s outbreak. However, the material losses were substantial, with the destruction of machinery valued at approximately INR 10.5 lakh representing a significant setback for the involved construction operations.
The firefighting efforts involved coordinated responses from both the South and North Fire Stations in Kohima. Fire personnel, supported by two fire tenders from the South station and an additional tender from the North station, were deployed to contain the blaze.
