A significant stride towards fostering education and empowerment has been taken in the Wokha district of Nagaland with the official launch of an Adult Literacy Campaign. This vital initiative, a collaborative effort between the Zukhumki Federation, the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission Wokha, the District Administration, the Department of Higher Education Wokha (DHEW), and Social Welfare under the Mission Shakti (BBBP) scheme, commenced on April 29, 2025, at the Tsungiki Community Hall, located in the Chukitong Block. The primary goal of this campaign is to significantly improve adult literacy rates within the region, thereby empowering local communities through enhanced education and awareness.


According to a DIPR report, Dr. Wonjano E. Enny, the District Coordinator of DHEW, provided a comprehensive overview of Mission Shakti, detailing its core objectives and outlining the various beneficial government schemes accessible to the citizens of Nagaland. Notably, she emphasized crucial safety guidelines specifically designed for women, highlighting the campaign’s commitment to ensuring that marginalized groups gain equitable access to essential educational opportunities and resources.


Senior SDEO Raphael Zubonthung delivered a compelling address, underscoring the profound importance and far-reaching benefits of adult literacy. He meticulously explained how enhanced literacy skills can lead to significant improvements in socio-economic conditions and foster greater individual empowerment among participants, strongly encouraging active involvement from all community members in this transformative initiative.


Key officials representing the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission, the Village Development Board (VDB) of Tsungiki, and Block Project Manager Janthungbemo Ezung also contributed their valuable insights during the launch event. They collectively expressed their unwavering commitment to actively supporting the adult literacy campaign and ensuring its successful and impactful implementation across the targeted communities.


A particularly inspiring moment was the sharing of a success story by Zuchobeni, the President of the Englan Range Women Livelihood, Thrift and Credit Cooperative Limited. She eloquently highlighted the tangible positive impact of the adult literacy campaign already underway in the Englan Range of Wokha, emphasizing its role in fostering crucial skill development and promoting greater financial inclusion within those communities.


Representatives from the VDB and the Gaon Buras (GBs) of Tsungiki village enthusiastically pledged their full support for the newly launched campaign. They actively encouraged all villagers to embrace this opportunity and participate wholeheartedly, recognizing literacy as a fundamental catalyst for both social and economic advancement within their village.


The inaugural event commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by CRP-EP Lochumlo, setting a positive tone for the proceedings. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Lochumlo Kikon, the treasurer of Tsungiki VLO, who expressed sincere gratitude to all the stakeholders for their invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment to this vital endeavour.

The event was skilfully chaired by Lucy Kikon, the General Secretary of the Zukhumki Federation. She provided insightful perspectives on the campaign’s overarching vision and underscored the critical importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring that adult literacy becomes accessible to all individuals within the Wokha district.
