In a strategic move to boost its global presence, the Nagaland government hosted a special event titled “Nagaland’s Global Footprints: Cultural Diplomacy & International Engagements” in Kohima. The event, attended by ministers, dignitaries, and officials, underscored the state’s commitment to leveraging its unique cultural identity on the world stage.

Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, the event’s special guest, emphasized the critical role of Article 371(A) in safeguarding Nagaland’s distinct identity. He highlighted that this constitutional provision is the “foundation” that protects the state’s customs, land, and traditions, urging Nagas to use this privilege purposefully for global promotion.

Dr. Rio shared insights from his recent official tours to Japan and Russia, expressing gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassies for their support. He noted that Nagaland was one of only six Indian states—and the sole representative from the Northeast—to be honoured with these invitations.

During his visit to Russia for the Bharat Utsav closing ceremony, Dr. Rio reported that Naga artists and performers received international acclaim for their vibrant cultural displays. He also mentioned the upcoming inauguration of a Russia Today studio in Delhi, symbolizing the growing Indo-Russian relationship.

Abu Metha, advisor to the Chief Minister, provided a detailed presentation on the visits’ outcomes. He stated that these international engagements are crucial for promoting “Brand Nagaland” as a hub for investment, tourism, and culture. The collaborations aim to create a direct pathway for Naga youth to access global opportunities while strengthening Nagaland’s role in India’s diplomatic relations with Japan and Russia.

The event also celebrated Naga talent, with Dr. Rio unveiling the cover of TREEKAM, an international music collaboration album, and honouring artists who performed at the Bharat Utsav. The evening featured cultural performances and was a testament to Nagaland’s rich traditions.

Ultimately, this special event on Nagaland’s Global Footprints marked a pivotal moment for the state’s future. By formally embracing cultural diplomacy, the Nagaland government is strategically positioning itself to become a more active participant in the global community. The focus on Article 371(A) not only serves as a powerful reminder of the state’s unique identity but also reframes this constitutional protection as a foundation for international engagement rather than isolation.

The concrete outcomes from the visits to Japan and Russia demonstrate a clear pathway for progress. The MoUs and collaborations in healthcare, education, and human resource development are not just diplomatic gestures; they are practical steps toward creating tangible benefits for the people of Nagaland.
