In a significant move towards revolutionizing its healthcare sector, the Department of Health and Family Welfare (DoHFW) in Nagaland recently put together a significant two-day meeting, engaging Karthik Adapa, the esteemed Regional Adviser for Digital Health at WHO SEARO, from April 2nd to 4th, 2025, in the capital city of Kohima. This strategic assembly was meticulously designed to dig into the vast potential of innovative digital health solutions and their transformative capacity to reshape healthcare deliver across the state’s diverse landscape.

 

In the meeting foundation of Nagaland’s healthcare modernization efforts, was skilfully presided over by Commissioner and Secretary, H&FW, Anoop Kinchi, and witnessed enthusiastic participation from senior DoHFW officials alongside key stakeholders representing the vibrant healthcare and digital health sectors. The initial day of discussions, held on April 2nd, centered on the critical implementation and reliability of free, open-source digital health solutions. These surround a broad spectrum of technology, including electronic health records (EHRs), digital medicine platforms, and sophisticated health data management systems. Each solution was carefully evaluated for its potential to optimize healthcare delivery, enhance patient outcomes, and smooth resource management within Nagaland’s existing health infrastructure. By observing the practical realities of these facilities, participants were able to assess their current capabilities, identify existing limitations, and understand the specific needs of the local healthcare provider and patients.

 

Following these informative site visits, the official reassembles at the Directorate of H&FW to continue their discussions with key stakeholders, including representatives from various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and departmental officials. This session digs into the transformative potential of advanced technologies, such as Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and explores how these innovations could be strategically applied to enhance the healthcare system’s efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness. The group also made a visit to the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), where they further examined the prospect of incorporating advanced technologies to drive improvements in medical research and optimize healthcare delivery across the region.

 

The final day of the meeting, April 4th, was dedicated to visiting key healthcare facilities in Dimapur, a significant urban centre in Nagaland. The officials toured the District Hospital Dimapur, conducting a thorough assessment of its infrastructure, medical equipment, and patient and services. They also visited the Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR), a renowned institution, focusing on its research endeavour, medical training programs, and the integration of advanced healthcare technologies.

 

The two-day meeting and the site visits provided a comprehensive and invaluable platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and forge collaborative partnerships aimed at strengthening Nagaland’s healthcare ecosystem through the strategic adoption of digital health technologies.
