Former Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, a prominent figure in Indian politics and a former BJP leader, passed away on August 15, 2025, after a brief hospitalization. His demise marks the loss of a seasoned statesman and a dedicated public servant who served in various gubernatorial roles across the country. The news of his death was met with an outpouring of grief and condolences from political leaders, government officials, and various organizations in Nagaland and beyond. La. Ganesan’s career was characterized by a deep commitment to public life and service. He held significant positions that showcased his administrative prowess and political acumen. From August 27, 2021, to February 19, 2023, he served as the Governor of Manipur. His tenure was also extended with an additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal from July 18, 2022, to November 17, 2022. On February 20, 2023, he took the oath as the Governor of Nagaland, a role he held with humility and dedication until his passing on August 15, 2025. During his time as Nagaland’s Governor, he was lauded for his down-to-earth nature and genuine concern for the welfare of the Naga people. His visits to remote and far-flung areas of the state were particularly noted as a testament to his love for the people and his commitment to addressing their issues. 


Following his death in Chennai, La. Ganesan’s mortal remains were brought to Kannadasan Grounds in T. Nagar for public viewing. The state funeral, held with full military honours, took place at the Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium on August 16, 2025, at 5 p.m. A high-level delegation from Nagaland, including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Ministers T.R. Zeliang and Y. Patton, Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, and DGP Rupin Sharma, travelled to Chennai to pay their last respects. Nagaland BJP president Benjamin Yepthomi also attended the funeral to pay homage. The state delegation met with the bereaved family to offer their condolences, expressing solidarity and sharing in their grief. In a poignant post on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Rio expressed his deep respect for the late Governor, praising his “humility, dedication and selfless service to the people.” 


The news of La. Ganesan’s passing prompted a wave of condolences from various political parties and organizations in Nagaland, all mourning the loss of a respected leader. 


Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA): Speaker Sharingain Longkumer described him as a “distinguished statesman and a dedicated public servant.” He recalled Ganesan’s tireless work for the welfare and progress of Nagaland, which earned him the respect and admiration of all sections of society. 


Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP): Party president Chingwang Konyak expressed shock at the sudden demise, highlighting that even as the nation celebrated Independence Day, Nagaland was mourning the loss of a humble and true gentleman. The party credited him with steering the state with wisdom and maturity during his brief tenure. 


Naga People’s Front (NPF): President Apong Pongener conveyed his deep sadness, noting that Ganesan served the state with “humility, integrity and a deep sense of responsibility.” The party acknowledged his significant contributions as a statesman and constitutional head.
Tribal and Civil Society Organizations: Condolences also came from prominent organizations like the Sümi Hoho, Ao Senden, and the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC). Each organization paid tribute to his character and contributions. The Ao Senden president, Marsanen Imsong, called him an “able parliamentarian, administrator, modest and down-to-earth person,” and an “epitome of integrity, principles and wisdom.” The NTC referred to him as a “people’s Governor,” who was open-hearted and close to the Naga people. The Confederation of All Nagaland State Services Employees Association (CANSSEA) also extended its heartfelt condolences, remembering his dedicated service. 


In honor of his significant contributions, the Nagaland government declared a seven-day state mourning from August 16 to 22, 2025. This period of mourning reflects the profound respect and gratitude the people of Nagaland hold for their late Governor. La. Ganesan’s legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to public service, his humble approach to leadership, and his genuine connection with the people he served. His life serves as an inspiration, and his contributions to the states of Manipur, West Bengal, and particularly Nagaland, will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
