The spirit of unity and cultural richness was on full display as the Moatsu Festival 2025, also dubbed the Mini Hornbill, commenced its celebrations at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on Thursday. This significant event, a collaborative initiative by the esteemed Ao legislators and the Government of Nagaland, promises a captivating showcase of Ao Naga traditions and festivities.


Addressing the enthusiastic gathering, the Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Sharingain Longkumer, highlighted the profound significance of the Moatsu festival. He emphasized that it is an auspicious time for the Ao community to seek abundant blessings for the year ahead. Acknowledging the historical contributions of the Ao people, Longkumer noted their pioneering role across various domains, including religion, education, sports, music, art, and political leadership. He underscored that their rich legacy has shaped their present identity.


Furthermore, Longkumer urged attendees to use this occasion for reflection, encouraging introspection on the progress of society and the direction in which their collective footsteps are leading. He cautioned against losing sight of their blessings amidst rapid advancements, stating, “Faced with progress in this ever-changing world, we tend to forget the things we have been blessed with. We have become victims of what we desire.” Therefore, he advocated for a thoughtful retrospection on their blessings and current standing as a foundation for embracing the future with wisdom.


Earlier in the day’s proceedings, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, delivered a warm welcome address, setting a positive tone for the festival. Limanungsang Dobashi eloquently elucidated the cultural and historical significance of the Moatsu festival, providing valuable insights into its traditions. The Mokokchung District Gaon Bura (GB) Association enriched the event with a traditional folk song, while the talented members of Note Grid School of Music Mokokchung presented a special musical performance, adding to the festive atmosphere.


The afternoon session witnessed spirited competition, featuring an engaging inter-ward tug of war that fostered camaraderie and friendly rivalry. This was followed by captivating indigenous games played between students from various ranges, offering a glimpse into the traditional sporting heritage of the region. The evening culminated in a highly anticipated inter-ward folk song competition, a vibrant display of Ao musical talent and cultural expression, graced by the presence of esteemed advisor TN Mannen.
